What does it take to put a good floor in an Indianapolis basement?
Basement flooring in Indianapolis means putting a finished floor over the bare concrete slab at the bottom of your house, so the basement looks and feels like the rest of the home. Before anything goes on top, the slab gets tested for moisture.
Most basements I look at have concrete that's cold, dusty or a little damp in spots, and the owner wants a room down there they'd actually use. The price moves with the size of the room, what's on the floor now and whether it has to come up, how much work the slab needs, and the floor you pick. The schedule turns on what the moisture test shows and whether any old tile has to be tested first. That's why I look at the floor in person and write up what it needs, so your estimate fits your basement and isn't a guess.
How do you know your basement floor needs work?
Dark or damp patches
If parts of the slab look darker than the rest, or a rug comes up damp underneath, moisture is usually working up through the concrete. Put a floor over that without a plan for it, and the new floor is usually the first thing to go.
Old flooring lifting or smelling
Carpet that smells musty, or tile that lifts at the edges, usually means the slab underneath is holding moisture or the old glue has let go. Leave it and the smell settles in, and the tear-out gets bigger when you finally redo the room.
Cracks and rough spots
Cracks, pits and flaky patches in bare concrete mean the slab needs work before it can take a finished floor. Covered as they are, they usually show back through, so it's cheaper to fix them once, during prep.
How we put in a basement floor
A basement floor starts with what's coming up through the slab, so we test for moisture before we talk about what goes on top. Then I look at what's on the floor now, and if there's old tile down there, I'll tell you to get it tested before anyone pulls it up. Once we know what we're working with, our crew clears off the old covering, grinds the concrete so the new floor has something to grip, fills the cracks and pits, and puts down the system you picked.
Most of the work you'll never see is concrete grinding and surface preparation, because a floor only holds as well as the surface under it. If you'd rather keep the bare concrete, concrete sealing closes up the slab so it stops dusting and is easier to keep clean.
Slab prep for another floor
If you've already picked a floor and an installer, we can test, grind and repair the slab so it's ready for them. This suits you if you want the concrete handled by a crew that knows how a slab behaves.
A sealed or coated slab
If you want the concrete itself to be the floor, we finish the prepped slab with a sealer or a coating system bonded to it. This suits basements used for storage, a gym or a workshop, where you want a floor that's easy to clean.

What happens when you call about a basement floor in Indianapolis?
Here's how it goes from your first call to a finished floor, and who you'll be dealing with at each step.
Call or send a message
Call (317) 429-4446 or use the form, and tell us a little about the room and what's on the floor. We set a time for me to come out and see it.
I look at the floor
I check what's on the floor, what shape the concrete is in and how damp it is. Then I write up what it needs, with the prep and repairs spelled out, so you can see what the price is built from.
We prep, install and walk it
If you go ahead, our crew preps the concrete first, fixes what needs fixing and puts the system down, and I'm on the job with them. Before we leave, we walk the finished floor with you.
Why Indianapolis homeowners call Landmark Epoxy Flooring of Indianapolis for basement floors
The owner writes your estimate
I come out, look at the floor and write the estimate myself, and I'm on the job with our crew when the work gets done. The person who told you what your slab needs is the one making sure it gets it.
Years finishing concrete before coatings
I spent years pouring and finishing concrete for other outfits before I started this business in 2023. That's where I learned how a slab behaves, and that's most of what decides whether a basement floor holds.
Licensed and fully insured, every job
We're licensed and fully insured, so a problem on your job doesn't land on you. Inside the Consolidated City of Indianapolis, the city's Department of Business and Neighborhood Services requires anyone doing construction work to be a listed contractor, though Lawrence, Beech Grove, Speedway and Southport fall outside that licensing.
If you want a straight answer about your slab before you buy anything to put on it, contact us or call (317) 429-4446.
Basement floors, slab prep and sealing in Indianapolis
Inside the Consolidated City of Indianapolis, the city requires a permit for alterations to an existing structure and for structural alterations, unless its building standards exempt the work. Whether your basement floor falls under that depends on the job, so we check with the right office for your address before work starts, and if a permit is needed, we pull it ourselves.
The slab matters for more than the floor. The county health department says radon gas from uranium in the soil can seep in through cracks in a basement or slab foundation, and that testing is the only way to know whether your household is at risk. The department offers free radon tests you can request by calling 317.221.2266, and since we're already going over every crack during prep, before the new floor goes in is a good time to ask for one. We see plenty of older basements with tired, patched slabs on jobs in Beech Grove and Speedway, and the prep there is the same as it is here.
Questions about basement flooring in Indianapolis
Does my basement floor need a moisture test before new flooring goes in?
Yes. National wood flooring guidelines call for a moisture test every time, whatever the conditions, because a known moisture problem can damage the floor, the house and the people living there. Glued floors add another limit, since one maker's instructions want test results within what the adhesive can handle. If you're comparing contractors, ask each one how they'll test your slab.
Can you put wood flooring in a basement in Indianapolis?
Often, yes. National guidelines say solid and engineered wood can go over a concrete slab when the concrete is properly prepared for it, but only where there's no known moisture problem. The slab has to be tested and moisture control has to be in place before the wood goes down, so that work comes first.
How much does basement flooring cost in Indianapolis?
Across the US, basement flooring installation usually costs about $2,500 to $8,000 per project, and that's the market's range, not our price. Where your job lands depends on the room's size, the shape of the slab and the floor you choose. I'll write up what yours needs once I've seen it.
Is it safe to pull up old floor tile in my basement?
Not until you know what's in it. Asbestos has been used in floor tiles, and the county health department recommends a locally certified asbestos contractor whenever materials with asbestos are disturbed or removed. The department can test building materials, so have the tile checked before anyone starts scraping.
What causes a new basement floor to peel or come loose?
Usually it's the concrete or the prep, not the product. Moisture pushing up through the slab, a surface that was never ground clean, or cracks that got covered instead of fixed will let even a good floor go. That's why I'd rather tell you your slab needs work than coat over a problem.
How do I get my basement ready for a new floor?
Clear the room before the start date, because moving furniture and other things out ahead of time can lower installation costs. The rest of the getting-ready is our job, and I'll tell you at the estimate if anything else has to happen first.

Concrete Grinding & Surface Preparation
Old glue, paint or a rough, uneven slab needs grinding down to clean concrete first, or the new floor has nothing solid to hold onto.
Concrete Sealing
If your basement is mostly storage or a workshop, a sealed slab cuts down on concrete dust and spills wipe up instead of soaking into the floor.
