What does a terrazzo floor involve in Indianapolis?

Terrazzo flooring is a hard floor made of chips set in a binder, then ground and polished smooth. In Indianapolis, we put it down as poured terrazzo or terrazzo tile over a concrete slab we've prepped first.

Most people who call about terrazzo have one of three things: a room that takes a beating, a slab they're tired of covering up, or an old terrazzo floor that's lost its shine. The price moves with the size of the room, whether you go poured or tile, whether the floor is inside or outside, and how much has to come up first. The schedule depends on that same removal and on the shape your concrete is in. I look at the floor and write up what it needs, so you're working from your own numbers instead of a guess.

How do you know your floor is ready for terrazzo?

  • Covering that keeps wearing out

Carpet, vinyl or laminate that's worn through in a hallway, entry or kitchen usually means the room needs a harder floor than it has. Every year you put it off, you're paying to replace a covering that will wear out again.

  • Cracks or high spots in the slab

Cracks, dips or high spots in bare concrete usually mean the slab needs work before anything goes on top of it. Left alone, they tend to grow, and fixing them later means pulling up a finished floor.

  • Old terrazzo gone dull or chipped

An older terrazzo floor that's lost its shine or is chipping along the divider strips usually needs grinding, polishing and some patching. Chips catch dirt and spread, so a repair now is a smaller job than a repair later.

How we install terrazzo flooring

Terrazzo takes skilled hands and a lot of steps, so I start with the two choices that shape everything else, poured or tile and inside or outside, and with what has to come up before we start. Once that's settled, we get down to the concrete and prep it, because most terrazzo bonds to the slab underneath it and resin terrazzo is only a thin top layer of resin and chips over a flat slab. Next we set the divider strips, the thin lines that split the floor into sections, over the joints in your slab, since most systems need them there. Then we pour the mix and grind and polish it until the chips show clean and even.

A lot of good terrazzo work happens before any terrazzo goes down. If your floor needs old coatings, glue or high spots taken off, that's concrete grinding and surface preparation, and it's the part I won't rush. If the room is downstairs, we'll also talk through basement flooring, because a below-grade room can steer you toward a different floor.

  1. Poured terrazzo

It's mixed, placed, ground and polished right on your slab, so you end up with one continuous floor. It suits a room you plan to keep for a long time and a budget that can carry the extra labor.

  2. Terrazzo tile

It's made ahead of time and set like other tile, so less of the work happens in your house. It suits an indoor room when you want the look and need to keep the cost down.

What happens when you call about terrazzo in Indianapolis?

Here's how it goes from your first call to a finished floor, and what you'll have in hand before you agree to anything.

  1. Call or send a message

Call (317) 429-4446 or use the form, and tell us the room size, what's on the floor now and whether it's inside or outside. We'll get back to you and set a time for me to come out.

  2. I look at your floor

I come out myself, check what's on the floor and what shape the concrete is in, and walk through poured or tile with you. You get a written estimate of what the floor needs, so the cost is on paper before you decide anything.

  3. We prep, lay and walk it

If you go ahead, we prep the concrete first, fix what needs fixing and then put the terrazzo down. Before we leave, we walk the finished floor with you.

Why Indianapolis homeowners call us for terrazzo

  • I write your estimate myself

I come out, look at the floor and write the estimate, and I'm on the job with our crew when the work starts. The person who told you what your slab needs is the one watching it get done.

  • Prep comes before any finish

I spent years pouring and finishing concrete for other outfits before I started this business in 2023, and that taught me how a slab behaves. If yours needs work first, I'll tell you instead of putting terrazzo over a problem.

  • Licensed and fully insured

The city says every contractor must be licensed, and an owner who hires one who isn't can end up paying for costly repairs or being held liable for injury or property damage. We're licensed and fully insured, so that risk doesn't land on you.

I can't tell you what terrazzo will take until I've seen the floor. Send us a message with the room size and what's on it now, or call (317) 429-4446.

Terrazzo and concrete prep in Indianapolis

The City of Indianapolis requires a permit for work that alters an existing structure, adds a new one or makes other structural changes, unless the work is exempt, and the contractor is the one who gets it. Whether your terrazzo job falls under that depends on what the job involves, so we check with the right office for your address before work starts, and if a permit is needed we pull it ourselves. If you're planning terrazzo outside a house in a historic district, exterior work there needs a Certificate of Appropriateness and stamped plans from the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission, so let me know at the estimate if that applies to you.

A lot of the floors we see here are older slabs that have been covered, patched and covered again, and their joints and cracks decide where the terrazzo layout can go. We see the same kind of concrete on jobs in Fishers and Greenwood, and we handle it the same way, by getting down to sound concrete before anything new goes on.

Questions about terrazzo flooring in Indianapolis

How much does terrazzo flooring cost in Indianapolis?

Terrazzo costs more up front than most floors, because surface prep, divider strips, pouring, grinding and polishing all take skilled labor. Terrazzo tile often costs much less than poured because it takes less labor to put in, though it's less durable. Your own number comes from the estimate after I've seen the floor and what has to come up.

How long does terrazzo flooring last?

One guide puts terrazzo's life at 40 to 100 years, which makes it one of the longest-lasting floors you can put in. That long life, with little upkeep and a floor that still looks good, is a big part of why owners and buyers like it.

Can terrazzo flooring go outside on a patio?

Yes, but one guide advises using cement terrazzo outside even though it costs more, because the other type can peel and fade outdoors. If you're planning outdoor terrazzo, budget for the cement type, and read the historic district note above if your house is in one.

Can terrazzo go over my existing floor?

Terrazzo can go over a concrete base, but a hardwood or linoleum floor has to come out before the project starts. Once that's up, I'll check the concrete underneath, since that's what the new floor depends on.

Does my terrazzo contractor need an Indianapolis license?

Yes. Inside the Consolidated City of Indianapolis, the city's Department of Business and Neighborhood Services licenses the people and businesses doing construction work, and that area leaves out Lawrence, Beech Grove, Speedway and Southport. We're based in Indianapolis and work in the cities around it, so if yours isn't listed, call and ask.

What causes a terrazzo repair to look a different color?

New material often won't match an old terrazzo floor exactly, because the aggregates, the mined chips in the mix, can change over time. If you're repairing part of a floor, I'll be straight with you at the estimate about where a patch is likely to show.

  • Concrete Grinding & Surface Preparation

Grinding takes off old coatings, glue and high spots so your concrete ends up clean and flat, which is what a terrazzo system needs to bond to.

  • Basement Flooring

If the room is in your basement, a floor planned for below-grade conditions may suit it better, and we can compare it with terrazzo on the same visit.
